Pinup Day Makeup

Day Makeup - Pinup/Retro Inspired Cat Eye.

Today I decided to apply a Pinup Girl/1940's inspired retro Cat eye on Georgina. This makeup look is quite simple and can be easily achieved as long as you stay with the key elements; Winged eyeliner and red lips.

I'm sure most of you will recognise this makeup from the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Dita Von Teese, Hedy Lamarr and many more, this is however my take, A little toned down for a more low-key and casual everyday look as opposed to the traditional eye catching, mat red lips and more dramatic black cat eye's.

I hope you like it.

BASE

I always start with the eyes. I find this creates no problem with 'fallout' or smudging mascara onto the foundation I just perfected, it also means you won't "Lean" onto or smudge the skin when it comes to the precise application of mascara and eyeliner, but obviously feel free to apply the foundation first if you find it easier.

  • I prepped Georgina's skin with a light moisturiser and applied Chanel's Le Blanc Base as a primer for the makeup, I do this as it needs time to settle before I apply foundation, it can do so as I start on the eyes.

EYES

  • Next, I used Essence: Eyeshadow Base on Georgina's eyelids and blended it in with a sponge. This ensures an even colour and prolongs the wear of the eyeshadow(s).

  • I used Calvin Klein's Tempting Glance Eyeshadow in the colour "Arctic" a white eyeshadow, for the eyelids, on the crease, I used a neutral light brown colour from a Rimmel eyeshadow palette. I applied this colour with a domed brush and then blended it outwards with a tapered blending brush. Ensure that you really well blend the eyeshadow to avoid any obvious or harsh lines.

  • That's all for eyeshadow! Next I moved onto the eyeliner, now this is the important part; If you're not very savvy with liquid eyeliner or just not used to using them, I would suggest using a light eye pencil first to outline before going over in the liquid or using a "pen" style eyeliner as they can be easier to control and correct mistakes. I always apply from the middle outward, Start quite thin and just line the top lid, do this to both eyes to ensure they're even, then go over again with your brush to make it thicker, when you come to the outer corners just flick it out.

  • Apply Mascara as usual on top and bottom lashes and curl eyelashes afterwards. I used Lancome's Hypnose mascara.

It can take a few practices if you aren't used to doing it, just remember take your time and be careful.

Tip: Dip a cotton swab in eyemakeup remover and use it to remove excess eyeliner and re-shape the flicks if they are uneven/messy.

FACE

  • That's the hardest part over with so now just apply your foundation as usual. Pinup makeup is typically quite pale in the face, so if you can use a lighter foundation definitely do so and let your bronzer sit this one out
  • I used Chanel's Mat Lumiere (20 Clair) as you don't really want a "Dewy" look. Use a duo fibre brush if possible, it achieves a very flawless "buffed" look.
  • I contoured Georgina's cheek bones as opposed to using blusher on the cheeks. I used MAC's Mineralise Powder in NW45 very lightly with a contour brush and went over with a translucent powder to blend it in.

LIPS

Now lastly, this look calls for an amazing rich, red lip but since this is a more toned down, casual take on Pinup I went for Chanel's Rouge Allure in Pirate.
This is an amazing blue-based bright red however because Chanel's satiny texture in this lipstick I was able to dab my lip brush and apply it very lightly, a little going a long way gave Georgina's lips a beautiful soft red colour without being so bold and dramatic as it would be applied straight from the tube.

That's all! I hope this tutorial was helpful to you and you are now able to go Pinup; a little less dramatic.

Kitch.
