Towards the end of last year, I fell out of love with clubbing. I wasn't really enjoying myself and it just seemed like a burden. A few months ago I was reading Vogue, the one with Taylor Swift on the cover and there was an article about the 70s which really resonated with me. Obviously it was a 70s fashion piece and 70s fashion was a lot of sequins and a surprising amount of skin. The article did not make me want to rock any chain mail, nor boiler suits but it did make me rethink the way I look at clubbing. I had lost the purpose of clubbing which is the sense of freedom, all I could see was the effort of getting ready, organising lifts and the pain of the hangover the following day. The particular quote that made me reconsider clubbing was from Julien Dossena, the creative director of Paco Rabanne, 'Nightclubs are a place for fantasy. They symbolise freedom and become this democratic space for self-expression where you can be whoever you want.' I had lost my sense of self expression I found in clubbing when I turned 18. Last year was hard for me and towards the end of the year, I didn't even know who I was but this year I want to bring back my sense of self. Clubbing gives you that chance to leave everything that is bothering you at the door and just have a good time. Even if I'm not going out as much as I used it, I want to seek this element of freedom from clubbing that comes from losing your inhibitions, that sense of freedom which can't be found on your average day.
Even though I have reclaimed my love of clubbing, there is one thing I need to stop doing which is buying a new outfit each time I go out. It now feels like part of the night out tradition but it is such a waste that I feel like I need to change my ways. This time I told my mother I would not buy a new outfit but I had a meltdown the day before and ended up on the Missguided website. I spent all morning, the day before, looking for an outfit. I couldn't find a dress I liked so I ended up looking for a skirt. I tend to go for black but for some reason I saw the Faux Leather Mini Skirt in Nude and I decided that was going to be part of my outfit. I did worry as I know faux leather can look cheap and tacky so this was a risky purchase, especially as I wouldn't be able to buy anything else before the night out. In the picture online it looked pink but in the description it said it was nude. I wanted it to be a baby pink and I know the pictures can sometimes be off when it comes to Missguided.
With my skirt selected all I needed was a top half. I did have a few options at home but really I wanted a bodysuit. My options at home were a crop top or a bralette and I didn't really want to show that much skin, I hadn't fake tanned. I really liked the white bodysuit they had paired with the skirt on the model however they didn't have my size. Plus it looked like it would go down too low and I didn't particularly want to show off the fact I have no boobs. So I searched for a bodysuit. I found a few but I couldn't get a white one in my size so I had to look for black. In the end I managed to find a black bardot bodysuit which I thought would pair perfectly with the skirt.
I wanted a bodysuit as I knew the skirt was a bodycon style and I wanted the top part to look sleek rather than ruffled from tucking it in. When it arrived I was pleased with the outfit as a whole but my skirt was faulty. I had ordered it the day before and it had arrived on the day I was going out so my options were limited. The fault was a stitching fault on the back seam, where the zip is, the bottom part had been missed by the stitch so there was a minor hole in the bum. Not ideal, but the hole was covered by the bottom part of the zip so you couldn't see my knickers but it just looked untidy. As I was having a quiet Saturday I had the time to sew it up myself. I'm sure people would have done a better job than me but you couldn't see my stitching and the hole was closed so I was happy.
It didn't look as cheap as I expected it to and it fit snug, possibly too snug as you will find out later in the post. I am a petite lady so I do struggle with sizing but Missguided is really good for short people. I had ordered the skirt in a 4 and it fit just right. The bodysuit was a tiny bit too big but that's ok. It just meant my vagina was not suffocated which is a luxury when it comes to a bodysuit. My favourite thing about the bodysuit was that it had thumb holes, I quite like long sleeves which cover my hands so this was perfect for me. For £12 I was pleasantly surprised by the quality, I thought it might be a little see through but it wasn't at all. I will definitely be wearing this again. I am sure I will get away with wearing this bodysuit and a pair of blue jeans for a casual day look.
I tried on my outfit as soon as it arrived and when I had decided I was happy with it, I took it off and went to bed. This was a problem as I didn't get out of my vegetative state until 6:30pm and I had to leave at 7:30pm to get into town for 8, I really didn't leave myself much time to get ready. The main thing I hate doing when I get ready is my hair. I never know what to do with it and everything seems like effort so I just straighten it. As I really didn't have much time and I didn't have a stitch of make up on my face there was no time to be adventurous.
With my make up, I had to go for something quite easy and effective. For my base I went for the standard products I use: Estee Lauder Double Wear, MAC Studio Finish Concealer, Benefit Hoola, Benefit Hervena Blush but I was more adventurous with my highlight. I recently bought MAC Hush Cream Colour Base so I used that to give a natural, dewy, soft glow but I did top it up with a tiny bit of Becca x Jaclyn Hill Champagne Pop. With my base quickly completed I moved on to the eyes.
I needed a look for my eyes which I knew well enough to do quickly but that was bold enough to be the centre of the look. As I was wearing a pink skirt I didn't want a red lip so I had to go for a nude which meant my eyes needed to be bold. I decided to go for a smoky eye based on the look I did for my Christmas Party with a few adjustments. I didn't want a full on glitter look just for a night out so the glitter had to go. I did stick with the same palette though, the Jaclyn Hill x Morphe Palette. I started with M.F.E.O as my transition shade as I have well and truly hit pan on Silk Creme so I have had to stop using it as much. Then I followed that with Butter throughout the crease. Then I mixed Butter with a tiny bit of Pukey and went back through the crease. To follow I used Roxanne a bit lower down in the crease and concentrated in the outer corner. Then I mixed all the red and brown deeper shadows together for the outer corner, mainly concentrating on Chip. This is very much the same as my Christmas look. I used my MAC Studio Finish concealer to brighten the inner corner and over the top I used Obsessed to give a bit of shimmer to the look. There was bit of fall out but I used a bit of concealer to tidy it up and that was my shadow completed.
After eyeshadow I applied my mascara. I am still using the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara, even though I don't like it, it is too expensive to just throw it out. I do like the finish it gives but I do not like the smudges it makes. After lashes it was brow time. As always I had lost part of my brow routine however this time it was the more important part, my Soap and Glory Pencil. As an alternative I had to use a sample Benefit Goof Proof Pencil which I hate and I can't help but make my brows look blocky when I use it. I did top this with the Soap and Glory Archery Brow Gel which I eventually found tucked away in my make up draw.
My lips were not a key part to the look but no one ever wants their lips to look crap. I opted for one of my favourite lipsticks which I don't use often Tom Ford Spanish Pink and I topped it off with the Pixi Liftmax Lip Gloss in Honey Sheen which came in my Marks and Spencer Beauty Calendar. It has a plumping effect which is what I wanted. I loved this lip combo and it didn't take away from the eye look too much but the combination gave a peachy colour to the lips.
All of this fit into my hour slot and I topped it all off with a spritz of Tom Ford Velvet Orchid which has been my night out perfume for a long old time. Unfortunately after my over zealous performance at my work Christmas party, this perfume now has an association with sickness so I don't think I am going to be able to wear it for a long time. If you have any good evening perfume recommendations, let me know as I am now on the look out.
That completes my night out look. I will 100% be wearing the bodysuit again but the skirt probably not. As we were sat in a bar, enjoying a few cocktails, the seam at the front of the skirt started to come undone. The skirt has no lining but luckily it didn't split so I didn't end up showing everyone my lady parts but I feel like if I wore it again it would go. I felt comfortable in my outfit (despite the splitting seam) and my makeup which made it a good night, as well as the company. My hangover the next day wasn't as fun and as I've gotten older it takes me way longer to recover than it did when I was 18. Luckily I had the crumpets and apple juice ready, the hangover cure of champs.
